Yala Yala Gibbes

Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungarrayi was an important Indigenous Australian artist and senior Pintupi cultural custodian associated with the influential Papunya Tula Artists movement. Born at Iltuturunga in the Western Desert near the border of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, Tjungarrayi grew up living a traditional nomadic lifestyle closely connected to Country, ceremony, and ancestral law. In 1963, he and his family relocated to Papunya, where many Western Desert communities were being resettled.

Tjungarrayi became one of the founding painters of the Papunya Tula cooperative in 1971, helping establish what would become one of the most significant movements in contemporary Indigenous Australian art. His paintings translated sacred ceremonial knowledge, Dreaming stories, and ancestral landscapes into powerful abstract compositions using intricate dotting, geometric forms, and symbolic iconography. Alongside his artistic practice, he remained a respected custodian of Pintupi ceremonies and sacred sites. His wife, Ningura Napurrla, also became a celebrated Papunya Tula artist. Today, Tjungarrayi’s work is regarded as an important contribution to the history of Western Desert painting and Aboriginal cultural expression.
