Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula

Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula was a leading Pintupi artist and an influential figure in the Papunya Tula Artists movement. Born near Haasts Bluff in the Northern Territory around 1938, he grew up closely connected to the traditions and ceremonial life of his ancestral Country. As one of the younger original Papunya painters, he began creating artworks for Papunya Tula in the early 1970s, shortly after the emergence of the Western Desert art movement.

Tolson’s paintings evolved from highly structured geometric compositions into more fluid and expressive works reflecting his growing ceremonial responsibilities and spiritual authority. His celebrated painting Straightening Spears at Ilyingaungau (1990) is regarded as one of the masterpieces of contemporary Aboriginal art, renowned for its shimmering linear imagery and powerful cultural symbolism.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Tolson served as the longest-serving chairman of Papunya Tula Artists, helping guide the cooperative through a critical period of international recognition. His works are held in major Australian museums and remain central to the history of Indigenous Australian art.
