Robert Bevan was a British painter, draughtsman, and lithographer best known as a founding member of the Camden Town Group and the London Group. Born in Hove into a prominent Quaker banking family, Bevan studied art at the Westminster School of Art before continuing his training at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he encountered artists associated with the Nabi movement, including Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard.
Travels to Brittany and Morocco exposed Bevan to Post-Impressionism and the work of Paul Gauguin, whose influence can be seen in his bold colour and expressive drawing style. Returning to England, he developed a distinctive approach that combined modernist experimentation with scenes of London streets, markets, horses, and rural life. Bevan’s energetic compositions and vibrant palette made him an important figure in early twentieth-century British modern art. Today, his work is admired for bridging the gap between Post-Impressionism and the development of modern British painting.
