Pierre-Joseph Buc'hoz was a French physician, botanist, naturalist, and prolific author whose work spanned medicine, botany, zoology, and mineralogy. Born in Metz and trained in medicine in Nancy, Buc'hoz became known for his wide-ranging scientific curiosity and dedication to the study of the natural world. He taught botany at the Collège Royal des Médecins de Nancy and traveled extensively throughout the Lorraine region, documenting its flora, fauna, and minerals in an ambitious multi-volume natural history. Alongside his botanical research, Buc'hoz explored alternative medical ideas, including the therapeutic use of music to treat melancholy. He published numerous richly illustrated works on medicinal plants, domestic animals, minerals, and exotic species, including studies of Chinese herbal medicine and brightly colored animals. His publications combined scientific observation with decorative illustration, making them highly regarded among collectors and historians today. Buc'hoz remains an important figure in eighteenth-century French natural history and botanical publishing.
