Leonetto Cappiello was an influential Italian-born artist widely regarded as the father of modern advertising poster design. Born in Livorno, Italy, and later based in Paris, Cappiello transformed the visual language of commercial art during the early twentieth century. Unlike earlier poster artists who favored elaborate decorative scenes, Cappiello pioneered a bold and simplified style featuring dramatic figures set against dark backgrounds, creating instantly memorable advertising images.
Beginning his career as a caricaturist for prominent French magazines, he soon shifted toward poster design, where his vivid imagination and striking compositions brought enormous success. Working with major Parisian publishers and advertisers, he created iconic campaigns for brands such as Campari, Pirelli, Chocolat Klaus, and Parapluie Revel. His posters combined theatricality, humor, movement, and vibrant color in ways that revolutionized advertising aesthetics. Over the course of his career, Cappiello designed more than 500 posters, many of which remain celebrated masterpieces of graphic design and early commercial art.
