Julian Ashton was an English-born Australian artist, influential teacher, and champion of Australian Impressionism. Trained in London and Paris, including studies at the Académie Julian, Ashton brought the ideals of French realism and plein air painting to Australia when he emigrated to Melbourne in 1878 before later settling in Sydney. He became a leading advocate for artists painting directly from nature, encouraging the depiction of Australia’s unique light, landscape, and everyday life. Through the founding of the renowned Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, he mentored generations of artists and played a pivotal role in shaping the Heidelberg School. Ashton also served as president of the Art Society of New South Wales and helped organize the landmark 1898 Exhibition of Australian Art in London, the first major international exhibition of Australian art. His own paintings, including Evening, Merri Creek, remain celebrated for their atmospheric treatment of the Australian landscape.
