Fra Angelico, born Guido di Pietro, was an Italian Dominican friar and one of the most influential painters of the early Renaissance. Renowned for his serene religious imagery and luminous frescoes, he combined deep spiritual devotion with groundbreaking artistic innovation. After joining the Dominican Order in Fiesole, he became known as Fra Giovanni and later earned the name “Angelico” for the grace and purity of his work. Supported by Cosimo de' Medici, Fra Angelico created celebrated frescoes for the convent of San Marco in Florence, including his iconic Annunciation. His paintings introduced greater naturalism, perspective, and emotional depth, helping define the visual language of the Renaissance. Later, he worked in Rome under Popes Eugene IV and Nicholas V, decorating chapels in the Vatican. Revered for both his artistry and piety, Fra Angelico was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and named the patron of Catholic artists.
