Albert Bierstadt was a German-American painter celebrated for his monumental landscapes of the American West. Born in Prussia and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Bierstadt studied painting in Düsseldorf before returning to the United States, where he became associated with the Hudson River School. Inspired by the dramatic scenery of the Rocky Mountains, Yosemite, and the western frontier, he joined several expeditions across the American West, creating sketches that later became grand, highly detailed studio paintings.
Bierstadt’s luminous landscapes, marked by theatrical light and sweeping scale, captured the imagination of nineteenth-century audiences and helped shape popular visions of the American frontier. Works such as The Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak and Among the Sierra Nevada, California established him as one of America’s most famous painters during his lifetime. Although later critics dismissed his romantic style as overly dramatic, his reputation revived in the twentieth century, and he is now regarded as one of the defining interpreters of the American landscape tradition.
